Quip isn’t bulky and unsightly like most electric toothbrushes it’s actually attractive (sleek and modern), making it a beautiful accent piece for your bathroom. In fact, it doesn’t have to take up any space at all, if you make use of its wall-mount feature (pictured above), a sticky strip on the tube portion of its stand that also doubles as a travel cover. The Quip Electric toothbrush has a slight vibration to it but is. Superficially speaking, the Quip’s clean, sleek aesthetic is what hipster dreams are made of: It’s significantly shorter and narrower than any of the clunky major electric toothbrush players on the market, and because it’s battery-powered with a regular ol’ AAA battery said to last three months, it doesn’t take up very much precious real estate on your bathroom sink. Im use to having electric toothbrushes and I dont think this really qualifies as one. Customers especially enjoy the sleek design and extra features like timed brushes. As BuzzFeed staffer Rachel Miller mentioned in her review of the Quip, she describes its sound as being similar to a "purring cat," and according to its founders, “it’s quiet enough that parents can brush their teeth without waking up any little ones sleeping in the next room.” The Quip toothbrush has an impressive 4.6/5 stars from over 11,000 reviews by verified customers and dental professionals. It’s barely larger than a traditional plastic handled toothbrush. The soft-bristled brush - the bristle texture, it’s worth noting, recommended by the ADA - operates using sonic vibrations and, compared with brushes like Oral-B and Sonicare models, is super-duper quiet when in use. The quip toothbrush is very compact for an electric toothbrush.

A few years ago, Gearbox announced plans to publish Homeworld 3, which is being developed by Blackbird Interactive. The crowdfunding campaign generated the highest donation on average in Fig history. Instead of a string of low-wage jobs, my mother had a career, and instead of alcoholism, my stepdad had health problems.Īt every new school and in every new town, I laid down whatever inventions I’d been living with since the last time we moved. When someone else’s parents took me home from a sleepover or sporting event, I’d give them directions to a nicer house in a nicer neighborhood, then walk home after they drove away. The next time we moved, I was careful not to let any of my friends find out where I lived. Like many poor people, we were subject to the uncertainty and chaos that comes with a lifetime of bad jobs and worse landlords, and we moved often. If something changed inside me that day, I didn’t feel it. For the first time, I saw myself through his eyes, and it made me feel very alone. But at my 10th birthday party, my best friend’s brother made it clear he was not having fun the cheap birthday cake and off-brand snacks were not good enough for him, and he complained that there weren’t any video games to play at my house. His parents insisted his twin brother come along for these sleepovers, and for a while, that worked out just fine. My best friend, whose family was rich, enjoyed sleepovers at my house just as much as I enjoyed staying over at his: I got the thrill of playing video games and splashing around in his parents’ Jacuzzi, and he got to stay up all night watching the kinds of movies his parents would never let him see. I’d known for years that my family was poor, but it wasn’t something I was especially self-conscious about. Soon after we returned, I started telling lies of my own. Being asked to lie about that trip wounded me in some imperceptible way. Florida was something different, even if I didn’t realize it at first. That kind of lying is not so much learned as imposed. Lying to ourselves allows us to believe it’s all going to be OK, somehow, someday. Lying to the social worker keeps our family together. Lying to the landlord keeps a roof over our heads. Observing this etiquette doesn’t feel dishonest because its falsehoods recognize the deeper truth that many of society’s institutions are hostile to the poor. If I ever thought of these as lies, I soon came to see them as part of the etiquette of poverty - a means of getting by for the poor and also a gift we give to the rich, a practice that lets us avoid talking about the uncomfortable differences between us. And I’d read the notes outlining invented reasons I couldn’t attend school whenever there were field trips that cost money we didn’t have. I knew when she’d passed bad checks because the owner of the corner store taped them to the back of the cash register until the debt was paid. I’d heard my mom swear that the rent check was already in the mail while watching her slip it into an envelope. I was mindful, too, of what could happen to my stepdad if my lies unraveled.īy then, I was familiar with the kinds of stories poor people must get used to telling. But for weeks after we got home from Florida, I was mindful of the person I was now supposed to be: a boy touched by tragedy, still grieving for some lost relative. Stumbling through our cheap hotel room, I saw my stepdad packing a suitcase with bricks of cocaine - something the television program “Miami Vice” had taught me to recognize.Īside from some new furniture, our lives didn’t improve in any material way because of my stepdad’s working vacation. None of it made any sense at all until our last night in Florida, when I woke up to use the bathroom after a long, soda-fueled day of exploring the Magic Kingdom. My stepdad was miserable by the time we crossed the Rockies, and I couldn’t help wondering why he hadn’t chosen to make the much shorter drive to Disneyland, in California. Then there was the decision to drive cross-country to Florida, which hardly seemed practical for a family living on a small island in southeastern Alaska. We were very poor and had never been on vacation, much less traveled to an amusement park resort. Staring down the American landscape from the back seat of a rented car, I pondered the logic and suddenness of our trip. I remember being touched by my teachers’ condolences, which struck me as genuine, even if the funeral was not. As the oldest of three children, I had the job of excusing our prolonged absence by telling our school we were headed to a family funeral. It was April of 1989, and my parents said the trip couldn’t wait until summer break. Our destination was Walt Disney World, in Orlando, Fla., and the cost of admission was a lie. When I was 9, my family went on a long, strange road trip. This was undoubtedly achieved in part by the game’s strong art direction: from start to finish, Uplink looks like a playable version of a hacker-themed movie like WarGames or Sneakers. While Uplink might not be the first ‘hacking simulator’ ever created ( System 15000 predates it by over 15 years), it’s probably the most important one as it codified most of the elements of this (admittedly pretty small as most games that feature the concept of hacking generally reduce it to a simple minigame) genre and popularized it among gamers. The only way for Introversion to succeed was by making the kind of games nobody else was making – and this is exactly what they did, developing unique games about things ranging from hacking to administrating a prison to annihilating humanity in a thermo-nuclear war. When they made their first game, they couldn’t compete with big-budget projects as creating contemporary-looking games required manpower and technology they didn’t have but they also couldn’t just rely on nostalgic gamers looking for something more oldschool as the retrogaming market was much smaller than it is now (not to mention that current definition of “retro” is much broader than the one from the beginning of the century). ![]() ![]() Introversion Software, the company behind Uplink (not to be mistaken with a Half-Life standalone expansion by the same title) is quite an unusual one: a small British software house created after most of the small British software houses dissolved and the market became dominated by AAA developers but before the indie boom and the popularity of crowdfunding which made businesses like that profitable again. ![]() ![]() We are taken on a guided tour of gay bars and beaches, turkish baths, parks, S & M scenes (Sado-Masochism) for those of you who aren’t aficionados), queer parties and movie houses, faggot social life and street life, and so on. One night sex and cigarette smoke and rooms squashed in by loneliness…Īnd I would remember lives lived out darkly in that vast City of Night, from all-night movies to Beverly Hills mansions.Īctually, City of Night is two books of short stories, sneaking their way through each other to give the volume the appearance of a novel, partly, I would guess, because novels are more negotiable than short stories and partly, I am sure, because the amorality of the characters in what I will call Book One helps disguise the eminently respectable morality of the hero-narrator in Book Two. Later I would think of America as one vast City of Night stretching gaudily from Times Square to Hollywood Boulevard-jukebox-winking, rock-n-roll moaning: America at night fusing its dark cities into the unmistakable shape of loneliness. Here are three quotes that come to you through the courtesy of Page One alone: So fabricated is it that, despite the adorable photograph on the rear of the dust jacket, I can hardly believe there is a real John Rechy-and if there is, he would probably be the first to agree that there isn’t-for City of Night reads like the unTrue Confessions of a Male Whore as told to Jean Genet, Djuna Barnes, Truman Capote, Gore Vidal, Thomas Wolfe, Fanny Hurst and Dr. "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title. This is the worst confection yet devised by the masterminds behind the Grove epater-la-post-office Machine. "Rechy's tone rings absolutely true, is absolutely his own, and he has the kind of discipline which allows him a rare and beautiful recklessness. The book therefore has the unmistakable ring of candor and truth."-The New York Times Book Review Rechy writes in an authentic jive-like slang: the nightmare existence is explored with a clarity not often clouded by sentimentality and self-pity. "One of the major books to be published since World War II."-The Washington Post As the narrator moves from El Paso to Times Square, from Pershing Square to the French Quarter, we get an unforgettable look at life on the edge Bold and inventive in his account of the urban underworld of male prostitution, Rechy is equally unflinching in his portrayal of one hustling "youngman" and his search for self-knowledge within the neon-lit world of hustlers, drag queens, and men on every kind of make. When John Rechy's explosive first novel-now a classic-appeared in 1963, it became a national best-seller and ushered in a new era of gay fiction. Patients operated on by the robotic surgeries of the da Vinci System often contend with extensive infections, and others with artificial hips made with chrome-cobalt devices suffer from neurological problems. The “vaginal mesh” approach yields even more gruesome results. Less cohesive documentary than feature-length red flag, “The Bleeding Edge” assembles a range of talking heads and upsetting case studies to target several key villains: Essure, the permanent contraceptive implant used by millions of women, has left many of them with long-lasting pain and endless surgeries as the small, snake-like device worms its way into the uterus. The latest alarming documentary from “The Invisible War” and “The Hunting Ground” director Kirby Dick is a shocking expose of the medical device industry, and while the stories of the many lives destroyed by technology resonate, the unsettling imagery of the damage caused by those devices goes much further. “ The Bleeding Edge” oscillates between those two extremes. Activism can take many forms - on one extreme, the empirical argument, appealing to reason above all else on the other, the pure visceral nature of an emotional response.
